Point Buying
Just to save time and avoid spending an entire session on character gen, I've opted to use the point buying system for stats. More info is available in the character gen sticky.
Bonus XP
That's right! You have the opportunity to earn XP right out of the gate, before we even start playing. How, you ask? Because I'm awesome. XD And, since because this is a homebrew I can piece together from a variety of sources, and this lovely tidbit comes to you from BESM.
So here's how it works: A character profile can earn you up to 600 XP. Obviously, the more details you throw in, the better the reward is going to be. Give us a full physical description, break down your garg's personality, likes, dislikes, phobias, quirks, hobbies, talents, or really annoying habits (You know, like that really those people who always breathes through their mouth, never their nose? Or whistle through their teeth when they breathe? Yeah, you could play one of those people). Tell us which clan your character would have belonged to, give us the nationality. Heck, give us some details on your parent clan! The more you give, the more you get.
A character portrait is worth up to 600 XP. It could be as simple as a stick figure, or as elaborate as a professional portrait in full colour, action pose and background included and photoshopped until it sparkles. And I'll throw in a bonus 200 XP if you do it yourself. As with the profile, the more detailed it is the more XP you're going to get. I don't expect the works of De Vinci here; your portraits will not be judged on artistic talent, only that you've tried and had fun with it. Note: There will be no XP awarded if you present a picture of one of the existing characters from the show, or as sketched on GargWiki, and say “I look like him, only with (x difference).” For this you will be given 50 lashes with a pool noodle and sent back to the drawing board.
Magic
Here's the long and short: You don't have any. You don't even know if it exists outside of the stories the elders heard from their elders or Harry Potter. Sadly, there have been no ancient spellbooks inherited by the St. Paul's Clan. There are also no magical items. Will you get some later? It's a distinct possibility, depending on where you end up and who you run into. But starting out, you're all (for lack of a better term) Muggles.
A Note on Alternate Characters
The world in which your characters live is not a robust one; there are ten surviving clans of gargoyles in existence as of 1994 to present, and not all of them are on the immediately accessible plane of reality (Avalon and New Olympus). The Wyvern Clan of New York and the Loch Ness Clan are not playable, so that takes you down to six. Six clans, located in Japan, China, Korea, Guatamala, London and Montreal. And you'll be leaving Montreal.
So for the sake of the story and the setting, please build characters with the intention of playing them through to the end of the game. There should be all kinds of time to play with your build, and to discuss with other players what's being played and what you feel you'll need for a well rounded party, as these resources are being made immediately available while I plot the game itself. Allowances can be made when absolutely necessary, but unless your characters are in one of the above listed locations alternates become a bit problematic, and I'd prefer to keep the use of the Magical Plot Device to a minimum to insert new PCs.
